Anton Bauer produces some of the finest terroir-based wines in Austria today and these two Gruner Veltliner are fine examples of his kind of winemaking. The 2005 Rosenberg is medium lemon in color and offers aromas of minerals, citrus and blossoms. On the palate, it shows green apple and melon fruit, crispness and medium acidity, with good balance and a clean finish. The 2005 Gmork is a superb bottling. It has a brilliant green lemon-gold color, rich aromas of ripe melon and a honeyed mouth feel. It is a Gruner Veltliner with unusual depth and concentration, terrific melon flavors and a pleasant mineral aftertaste. You couldn't ask for more from a $10 bottle of wine!

Weingut Steininger, is a family winery situated in the Kamptal Valley in Lower Austria which is known for its fashionable estate-bottled Gruner Veltliner. Karl Steininger’s 2005 Gruner Veltliner Kibinett has a lemon gold color with some residual carbon dioxide and a flinty mineral nose. On the palate it offers a lush attack of green apples, white pepper and a lovely long finish and aftertaste. The 2005 Steven Holl is star-bright and lemon-colored with a touch of residual carbon dioxide and fresh aromas of pear and apple. On the palate, it exhibits crisp acidity, white pepper, and an extended finish. A lovely wine.

Weingut Tegernseerhof is a small family winery which produces very fine Gruener Veltliner from its cru vineyards located in the Wachau. The 2004 Bergdistel has a light-green lemon color, residual carbon dioxide, and displays pear and citrus/lemon notes on the nose. On the palate, it offers medium acidity with a touch of honey and white pepper and a long finish with some mineral notes. The 2005 T-26 is lemon gold in color and has some residual carbon dioxide on the nose. On the attack, it reveals notes of under-ripe pear and minerals with medium acidity and a pleasant dry finish.

Eponymous 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley ($58) 87

The 2003 Eponymous produced from hillside vineyards above the Silverado Trail by Robert Pepi is dark garnet in color and displays aromas of black cherry and raspberry fruit, spice, herbs and sandalwood notes. Aged for 20 months in new French and American oak, it is medium-bodied with moderate fruit intensity, and has a lush tart mouth feel and some dry tannin on the finish.

Source Family Home Cabernet SauvignonThe Source-Napa winery (formerly known as Origin-Napa) was founded in 2000 by Bill Davies (whose family owns Schramsberg Vineyards) and Tom Gamble a Napa wine grower. The winery produces small amounts of estate-bottled wines from several Napa Valley sources. The 2004 Gamble Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is light lemon and clear star bright. in color. Partly fermented in stainless steel and partly in oak barrels, it offers a white grapefruit nose with a touch of quince. It is medium-weight with a round palate of more citrus flavors, moderate acidity and a light sweetness on the long finish. The 2003 Mount St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon is dark garnet in color and offers aromas of black fruit, smoked meat and a touch of cedar. On the palate it is lush and well balanced and has a lovely extended finish. The 2003 Family Home Cabernet Sauvignon sourced form a 3.5 acre Oakville vineyard is dark ruby garnet in color and displays red and cassis fruit, oak and cedar aromas on the nose with gamey notes. On the palate it reveals lush concentrated fruit, depth of flavor, chewy tannins and grip on the finish. The 2003 Paramount is a Merlot-based Bordeaux blend offering aromas of fresh plum and raspberry. On the palate, the wine, which spends 19 months in barrel, is fruit- forward and supple showing good fruit extraction with light oak, good balance, round tannins and a pleasant finish.

Two Angels Petite Sirah 2005These two bottlings are produced by Napa winemaker, Robert Pepi with fruit sourced from Lake Country vineyards. The 2005 Syrah is medium-purple in color and offers fresh plum and blueberry/blackberry on the nose. On the palate it is medium-weight with notes of strawberry, toasty oak and vanillin. The 2005 Petite Sirah is dark ruby in color with rich black berry fruit and coffee aromas with toast and spicy notes. On the palate it reveals lush fruit, notes of coffee and chocolate, light oak, elegant mouth feel, good balance, soft tannins, and a lovely finish.

Encostas de Estremoz is a modern winery located in the Alentejo, a vast wine growing region in southern Portugal. The estate is owned and operated by José Castro Duarte a likeable professional agronomist who was a wine grower in the region for well over a decade before deciding to make his own wine. He now produces bottlings of traditional Portuguese varietals and blends that are modern, well-made and reasonably priced. His 2004 Quinta de Esperanca is a blend of 50 percent Touriga Nacional with Aragonez (Tempranillo) and Alicante Bouchet. It is medium ruby in color with a slightly reductive nose.of red fruit and spice. On the palate it offers more sweet red fruit and herbs with notes of tar on a simple clean finish. The 2003 Reserva is a more interesting blend (50 percent Touriga Nacional, with Touriga Franca, and Alicante Bouschet) which spends one year in new French oak.. It is dark ruby in color and offers attractive aromas of ripe black fruit, spice, and toast. On the palate it has a lush rich mouth feel with loads of black berry fruit, soft round tannins and a touch of sweetness on the finish. A lovely wine. The single varietal 2004 Touriga Nacional is a delicious fruit bomb with a youthful dark ruby color, a red berry whole cluster spicy attack and a long pleasant finish. The 2004 Trincadeira is medium-ruby in color and has red fruit aromas with tobacco and herbal notes. On the palate it is soft and supple with simple fruit flavors and a pleasant finish. The 2004 Touriga Franca is dark ruby in color with a fruity nose of black raspberries, a sweet lush attack of spicy mulberry and cranberry fruit, and a long finish. The 2004 Alicante Bouschet is dark ruby in color and offers aromas of dark cherry kirsh and light toast. On the palate it exhibits good concentration, good acidity, well-rounded tannins, and a good finish.

The 2004 Monte da Caldeira is a blend of Aragones (Tempranillo) and Trincadeira offering aromas of cherry and plum fruit, herbs and spice and some gamey accents. On the palate it is simple and easy-drinking and light- bodied with soft tannins.

The 2004 Branco is star-bright and light green-lemon in color and offers a nose of passion fruit, minerals and wet stones. On the palate it shows medium acidity, with good fruit concentration and a slight bitterness on the finish. The 2004 Tinto, a blend of Aragones, Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon, is ruby purple in color with big extracted aromas of youthful dark fruits, meat, smoke and spice. On the palate it displays lush ripe nicely concentrated fruit with a touch of licorice, round tannins and a full satisfying finish. The 2004 Reserva, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet and Aragones, is dark ruby purple in color and displays aromas of blueberries and cassis, earth and herbs with a touch of cedar box. It has a rich lush full-bodied palate of sweet black and blueberry fruit and chocolate with chewy tannins and a long satisfying finish. A super wine.

The 2005 Quinta do Ferro is pale straw-colored Vinho Verde with light apple aromas, a touch of flint and minerals, and some residual carbon dioxide. On the palate it has green apple and cantaloupe fruit flavors with a moderate and slightly bitter finish. The 2005 Avesso, also a Vinho Verde displays a bright light green-lemon color, delicious ripe pear, apple and melon fruit aromas and flavors, high acidity, lovely freshness and a pleasant finish. A terrific white wine for mild seafood dishes.

The 2004 Santa Valha has a light ruby color with aromas of cherry fruit and light oak. It is a clean and straightforward with a profile not unlike Oregon Pinot Noir or Tempranillo with an earthy brambly character, and light peppery finish.

Roquevale 2004 Tinto da Talha Grande Escolha Alentejo ($14) 89

The 2004 Tinto da Talha Grande Escolha is a modern young fruit forward wine of Syrah and Touriga and Nacional. It is opaque purple in color and offers black fruit and spice on the nose and a lush medium-bodied palate with soft velvety tannins and a long lovely finish. A very good wine, especially for lovers of Syrah with a Portuguese flare.

The 2000 Inferi is dark ruby garnet in color and offers aromas of black cherry fruit, smoke and meat on the nose. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with lush mouth feel, sweet oak, vanilla, spice and a touch of strawberry with a long finish A lovely modern wine that will pair well with roasts.

These superb wines are produced at San Patrignano, a rehabilitative community for individuals and families whose lives have been affected by drug addiction Winemaking numbers among the community’s first, best-known and most successful endeavors. .The vineyards of San Patrignano are located in the province of Emilia-Romagna less than three miles from the Adriatic Sea. The vineyards comprise some 260 acres. Consulting winemaker, Riccardo Cotarella provides his services pro bono to San Patrignano. These four wines are testimony to the professional vineyard management at San Patrignano and to Ricardo Cotarella’s outstanding winemaking. The 2005 Aulente is a 100 percent Sangiovese, full ruby in color with bright strawberry and crushed-berry aromas. It is medium-bodied, fruit forward on the attack with tart acidity and soft tannins on the finish. The 2003 Noi Coli di Rimmi Rosso is a blend of 60 percent Sangiovese, 20 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 percent Merlot.. It has a dark ruby garnet color with a nose of black cherry fruit, smoked meat, and cigar box. On the palate it displays rich and complex flavors of red fruit and leather with big ripe tannins and grip on the finish. The 2003 Avi Sangiovese di Romagna, a 100 percent Sangiovese, displays a lovely dark ruby garnet color and intriguing aromas of black cherry fruit, leather, and smoked meats. On the palate it offers a rich attack of soft lush fruit with notes of creosote and tar, soft round tannins and an extended finish. A superb wine. The 2003 Montepirolo is a delicious blend of 60 percent Cabernet, 30 percent Merlot and 10 Cabernet Franc. It is garnet in color and offers aromas of cassis, plum, and smoked meat. On the palate it is rich and complex with terrific mouth feel, gripping tannins and a long finish. Not to be missed.
