The Wines of Paso Robles: Exciting Red Bordeaux Varietals from the Cabernet Collective

ChÂteau Malartic-LagraviÈre:
Recent Vintages from Pessac-LÉognan

Grand Cru

Historic Château Malartic-Lagravière, located in the appellation of Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux, recently sent us their current releases for review. The wines, without exception, showed beautifully, leaving no doubt that Malartic-Lagravière continues to move in the right direction. Indeed since Alfred-Alexandre and Michéle Bonnie of Belgium took over the estate in 1997, Malartic-Lagravière has made tremendous advances in both the vineyard and the winery. The future also looks bright under the able management of the next generation: son Jean-Jacques and his wife Séverine joined by Jean-Jacques’ sister Véronique and husband Bruno.

Château Malartic-Lagravière owns 53 hectares of vineyards that are situated on well-drained gravel and clay soils with shell-rich limestone and clay sub-strata. The vineyards are densely planted with red and white varieties at an average of 10,000 vines/ha, and yields are 28 to 38 hl/ha in any given year. Since 1997 the Bonnie family has farmed its vineyards using organic and sustainable practices.
