RosÉs, RosÉs Galore – Fifty New 2011 Releases

"What wine to serve with light spring and summer dishes?"
Our answer, of course, is rosé!

Rosé

In this, our third annual report on rosés, we offer readers our evaluations of the best of the new 2011 releases from among the many wines originating in France, Spain, South Africa, Austria, Italy, and the US. Southern France is the home of many of the rosés we tasted--Côtes de Provence, Tavel, Costière de Nimes, and Languedoc-Roussillon. However, the rosés of other appellations are well represented in the more than 50 wines that we evaluate.

Dry rosés come in a wide variety of styles. If you're interested in learning more about how rosés are made, read our piece on "Techniques for Making Rosé Wine."

Roses are great food wines. When made well, like many of those reviewed here, they are perfect to accompany light lunches and dinners. They offer a combination of fruit, freshness and acidity that pairs perfectly with salads, spring vegetable soups, including spicy ones like gazpacho, charcuterie, white meats, and cheese. It’s easy to pair rosé with food, and we offer many good suggestions in our article, "Pairing Rosé with Food: Endless Possibilities."
